Fall Festival wrap up

On Saturday, Sept. 14, the weather god smiled on us here at Binleys. The day started with a light cloud cover and ended in glorius fall sun with mild tempertures. We had about 40 vendors offering everything form knit hats and garden accessories to cleverly reused “garage sale items”. We had popcorn vendors, cotton candy sales, maple sugar products and a food truck with all kinds of good eats. For the kids, there was a petting zoo, with a pot-bellied pig, goats, even tiny, baby bunnies, alpacas and pony rides. For the older set, we had about 20 classic and antique autos, chair massages and belly dancers. All this was backed up by a band playing swing, blues and music from “the American Songbook”. All in all, the day had a real festive, carnival feel to it. By the way, did I mention that we featured our fantastic garden mums? I hope you were here, but if not, definitely mark your calender for Saturday September 13, 2014. We’ve marked ours.

Binley's Fall Festival

Join us on Sat. September 14 from 9:30 AM to 4 PM for our 8th annual Fall Festival. WCKM's morning crew, Pete and Dan will be broadcasting live from 10 to noon. Again this year we've got something for everyone.

The SPCA of Upstate NY will be here with pets for adoption. Also our friends from the Parkland Alpaca Farm will be here with some animals. There will be vendors here with syrup, maple cotton candy and other maple products. Also we’ll have food venders and locally grown produce plus lots more.

There'll be local crafters, vintage cars and chair massages from The Massage Works.

Of course we will be featuring our spectacular garden mums and fall decor, including pumpkins and cornstalks. Stop by and join the fun. If you're not here, we'll miss you!

Finally, I thought I’d make a mention of our garden mums. They’re sizing up very nicely and they are right on schedule. In case you’re wondering, here’s a picure of what they look like now. Before you know it, this field will be ablaze with color.

Garden Seminar

We held our annual gardening seminar on Saturday April 20. There were about 70 folks in attendance to hear Dot talk on vegetable gardening and Chef Charles Jones of the BOCES culinary school talk about cooking with all those herbs you are going to grow in your garden. Binley Garden Seminar April 2013

This is the year you can have that large, lush vegetable or perennial garden you‘ve thought about all winter. Learn how to put your own money saving vegetables on the table all season long at our annual spring gardening seminar here at Binleys on Saturday, April 20th at 11 AM. Dot Eggleston, our garden manager for will make perennial and vegetable gardening easy for you in a session that will benefit novice and expert gardener alike. Learn how to plan a vegetable or perennial garden, choose a site, timing, container gardening and more.

We will again be featuring Chef Charles Jones from the Culinary Arts Program at BOCES. Chef Charles is a very entertaining speaker and his topic will be “Cooking with Herbs, part 2” expanding on his talk from last year. Everyone in attendance will receive free gifts, including a package of vegetable seeds and a coupon for 10 percent off your next garden purchase. Learn how to have a beautiful garden at Binley Florist and Garden Center this Saturday, April 20th at 11AM, 773 Quaker Rd. in Queensbury.

Business connection: Binley Florist & Garden Center keeps growing after 120 years

QUEENSBURY — Dot Eggleston checked out a customer in the Binley Florist shop last week, acting as cashier just about 20 minutes after she was pointing a hose down at palettes of geraniums in the greenhouse.

The floral shop and garden center’s employees are trained in a variety of different tasks — one of the strategies owners have used to keep the business afloat for 120 years.

“Cross-training our people for every job is really critical,” Binley owner Wally Hirsch said. “That helps balance out the slow times.”

Eggleston started at Binley as a seasonal employee, then began working there part time and eventually worked her way up to being a manager.
