Field Notes for July 2014

by Tami Field, Floral Manager

Fun Flower Facts

Did you know that in Victorian times, certain flowers had specific meanings?  Because the flower selection was limited and people used more symbols to communicate, flowers took on symbolic meanings.

Today, with so many flower choices, there are no rules. At Binleys we feel it’s the sentiment that gives the gift its meaning and the designers at Binleys work hard to help you send the right message.  For those interested in the historic means of some more common flowers, the Society of American Florists has compiled this list from a variety of different sources.

Alstromeria….aspiring                                                       Lilac….first love

Aster….contentment                                                      Stargazer….ambition

Baby’s Breath….festivity                                                  Lisianthus…..calming

Black eyed Susan….encouragement                                  Orchid…….delicate beauty

Daffodil…chivalry

Delphinium…boldness

Daisy…innocence

Freesia…spirited

Gardenia…joy

Gladiolus…strength of character

Hydrangea…perserverance

Iris…inspiration

Larkspur…beautiful spirit

Tradition says that some flowers like roses, tulips and carnation have different meanings depending on their color.  Whatever the occasion, remember, it’s the thought behind what you are sending and the design team at Binleys is trained to help you pick that sentiment.
