Field Notes for May 2014

by Tami Field, Floral Manager

Happy May! Hope everyone is starting to warm up and see some green outside.  Here at Binley Florist are gearing up for a busy season.

As promised, I am going to continue a little with wedding flower choices and the most important decision of course, being the bridal bouquet.  It’s best to have a little bit of an idea of color and type (hand-tied, traditional, cascade).  The bride does not necessarily have go with all white these days.  Brides are adding some color to their bouquets and even going with whites and crèmes for the attendant’s bouquets. There is really no “tradition” anymore, so if there’s something you may like but aren’t sure its “appropriate”, think again.   More and more brides are going for a more organic look, such as lots of greens, pods and succulents. Your Binley consultant would be more than happy to do a sample bouquet before your wedding.   Your groom should be wearing a flower to tie in with the bridal bouquet. Roses, mini cala lilies, mini gerbera daisies, mini sunflowers and spray roses make for the best boutonnieres.

Your attendants’ bouquets should be figured on a smaller scale.  If there are only a couple of people in the wedding then you can budget a little more money towards their flowers, but if you are looking at 7 or 8 bridesmaids, you may want to scale down, so that a lot of your budget isn’t taken up quickly. Don’t look to match your bridesmaids dresses; instead, accent and compliment them.   Your Binley wedding consultant will be very helpful in helping pick colors that will do just that.  Again, as with the groom, groomsmen should be wearing a common flower with the bridesmaids.

Family flowers are in a category all their own.  Be careful because you get a lot of “noses bent out of shape” over a corsage.  I suggest flowers for mothers, fathers, step-parents, grandparents and great grandparents.  With anyone further down the line than that, make a list, because its not worth having an Aunt that doesn’t talk to you for the rest of her days because of a corsage.  The biggest suggestion I can make is keep the family flowers a neutral color.  It’s not unheard of to have a mom or grandma change her mind on her dress the week of the wedding and you don’t want her wearing a red flower with a green dress.

Ceremony and reception flowers can be the largest part of your flower budget, especially table centerpieces.  Pick a centerpiece design that you like.  When your Binley consultant looks at it she can give you an approximate price and if its over your budgeted amount she can suggest similar flowers and colors that might work in that design.  We are just as excited about your special day as you are and if you are happy with what we have created for you, we know it will  make your day that much more pleasureable for you.

Always remember, if you have any questions at all, we are more than happy to talk to you over the phone or in person.  Please give us a call at Binley Florist and let us make your “Wedding Flower Dreams Come True”.
